Long service education

School governors were honoured for their long service at an event in Wigton.

It was the sixth and final such gathering to recognise governors throughout Cumbria who have served for twenty years or more.

Similar events took place in Carlisle, Penrith, Cleator, Grange and Barrow.

In all 141 governors were honoured. Each received a long service certificate from Cumbria County Council Chairman councillor Tom Clare.

The Wigton event included fourteen governors.

Dorothy Hodgson, a governor at Kirkbride Primary School, said:

"Education, and the role of governors, has changed immensely over the years but all through those changes one thing has proved key, working together. Children get one chance at this and we get just one chance to get it right for them."

Anyone interested in becoming a school governor can contact the Governor Support team at Cumbria County Council on 01228 226925 or visit www.cumbria.gov.uk/childrensservices/governors/recruitment.asp
