County councillors for Copeland yesterday heard plans on how the library at Egremont will be temporarily moved to the Town Hall this summer while a state-of-the-art new library is built at the new West Lakes Academy.
At a meeting of the county council’s Copeland Local Committee yesterday (April 27th), Cumbria County Council’s head of culture Jim Grisenthwaite explained to councillors that a temporary home needed to be found for the library as demolition work on the existing library could start as soon as August 2009.
The library is currently housed on the footprint of the site of the new West Lakes Academy along with the Egremont youth centre. The youth centre will be relocated to the Open Gates Centre on the site of Orgill Primary School.
The library will be relocated in the Town Hall in an area currently used by county council employees working in adult social care. Those employees will move to other areas within the Town Hall.
The library’s opening hours will remain the same, and library users will still have access to the county’s entire stock of books by using the free ordering service. The amount of stock on the shelves in the temporary library will be slightly smaller than the existing arrangements due to the more restricted space.
The date of the move will be well publicised to service users and the local community in advance. At this stage, the relocation is expected to happen in July.
Cumbria County Council’s head of culture Jim Grisenthwaite said:
"We’ll be doing everything to keep disruption to a minimum in our new temporary home, but I’m sure the wait for a new state-of-the-art library at the new Academy in a couple of years time will be well worth it. I’d like to encourage all existing users to keep using the service and for new people to try it out too. Hopefully our new location in the heart of Egremont will open more people’s eyes to what a great, user-friendly experience libraries give."
