27/8/2009 - GCSE results - Another excellent year forecast

GCSE students in Cumbria look on course for another year of outstanding results.

Early indications show the number of five A* to C passes, including English and maths, well up on last year’s record high results.

It must be remembered the results are not complete or validated and may well be subject to change.

We congratulate the young people on their results so far.

We are hearing of some outstanding successes at all levels.

Well done also to the parents and staff who have supported the young people throughout their schooling to enable them to achieve so well in their examinations.

Peter McGaw, Cumbria County Council’s principal school improvement officer, said:

"The continued improvements in the proportions of young people in Cumbria achieving and exceeding their expected grades at GCSE reflects the hard work of the pupils, teachers, staff and parents across the county."

Councillor Duncan Fairbairn, cabinet member responsible for schools and learning, said:

"Obviously whilst awaiting the final results, it seems our young people have again done (very) well in the GCSE’s. Congratulations must go to the young people and all involved with helping them achieve so well."

There are thirty six Local Authority maintained secondary schools in Cumbria.
