A bridge near Cockermouth that was closed following last month's floods has re-opened.

Southwaite bridge opened to local traffic yesterday evening (Monday) after resurfacing work was completed on the flood damaged road around the bridge.

To allow the opening to go ahead, traffic lights have been put in place as the parapet walls of the bridge need repair work and are protected with barriers which have narrowed the carriageway.

It has been opened to local traffic as the route is unsuitable for HGVs.

During and immediately after the floods 20 road bridges were closed, but after a series of bridges were given the all-clear following detailed assessments, the number of closures is down to the 10 below.
