Work to improve two roads in Barrow town centre will kick-off early in the New Year.
Cumbria Highways is carrying out a £300,000 reconstruction and resurfacing scheme on Lawson Street and Cornwallis Street from 4th January 2010 and work is expected to last 14 weeks.
Motorists are warned to expect delays and plan their journeys accordingly.
The scheme will take place in three phases:
Phase 1:
* Lawson Street & Market Street at its junction with Lawson Street will be closed
* Market Street bus stops will be closed and all buses will use Cornwallis Street as usual.
Phase 2: (expected to commence 12th January)
* Lawson Street will be closed but the westbound carriageway of Market Street at its junction with Lawson Street will be reopened and the one way working on Market Street between Lawson Street and Hindpool Road will be temporarily reversed.
* Market Street bus stops will be closed and all buses will use Cornwallis Street as usual.
Phase 3: (expected to commence 1st February)
* Lawson Street will be reopened and Cornwallis Street (including junction at Lawson Street) will be closed
* One way working along Market Street from Lawson Street to Hindpool Road will be temporarily reversed. Temporary traffic lights will be installed at Hindpool Road/Market Street junction.
* All bus services to be routed along Market Street in the westbound direction & additional temporary stops to be sited along Market Street
* Temporary taxi rank to be located on Lawson Street & alongside Town Square
* Town Hall Courtyard disabled car park will be closed; alternative parking will be available at Market Street car park.
While work is ongoing, car parking on Lawson Street and Market Street will be suspended, but Market Street car park will remain open as usual. Signed diversion routes will be in place at all times along Duke Street, Strand, Hindpool Road and Abbey Road.
