24/12/2009 - Warning over dangerous Christmas decoration

Cumbria Trading Standards is warning the public about a potentially dangerous Christmas decoration which has been on sale in Keswick since September.

The decoration has three candles which, when lit, are intended to drive a propeller which sits above a wooden model of the nativity scene.

However, the propeller blades are made of balsa wood, which then smoulder and catch fire within just a few minutes of the candles being lit. All remaining stock has been removed from sale and anyone who has bought the decoration is advised that they must not light the candles.

The decoration is described as ‘Xmas Pyramid Crib –Article No. 260065’. The labelling on the base of the box is labelled with the following details: 'OBC KUNSTHANDWERK RAFFEISENSTR.. 36-40 D-27239 TWISTRINGEN'.

Phil Ashcroft, head of Cumbria Trading Standards, said: "This decoration presents a serious fire hazard. I cannot state too strongly that the candles must not be lit. If you have one of these decorations please either return it to the shop or destroy it."

The decorations were imported from Germany and sold at Ye Olde Friars shop at 6 Main Street, Keswick. The owners of the shop received a complaint and brought the matter to the attention of trading standards officers.
