Penrith library has launched a new initiative to get families from all cultural backgrounds together to learn and have fun.
Every Wednesday afternoon from 4pm - 5.30pm, adults and children from different cultural backgrounds are invited to Penrith library to make dual language storysacks. When the sacks are made they will be available for loan through the library - making them the first dual-language sacks Penrith has offered.
Storysacks, which contain books, games and toys, help make reading more fun for parents and children and help with language development. Groups of Polish and English speakers have already met and created dual English/Polish storysacks.
Cllr Barbara Cannon, Cumbria County Council's cabinet member responsible for adults and culture, said:
"This is a great initiative which not only helps unite people from all different backgrounds, but also will encourage learning and reading."
The sessions are being run through CONNECT Cumbria, a network of museums, libraries, archives, arts & attractions in the north and east of Cumbria. CONNECT Cumbria’s aim is to co-ordinate, develop and promote lifelong learning services and is supported by Cumbria County Council Children's Services Extended Schools network. The storysack project is also being supported by Penrith Soroptimist Society working in partnership with the Eden Foyer Multicultural Group.
