19/2/2009 - Prince's Trust team step up to the crease to help Penrith cricket club

A team of hardworking youngsters from the new Prince’s Trust scheme in Penrith have renovated the town’s cricket club changing rooms after raising nearly £1,200 themselves.

The Princes Trust Penrith Team One visited Somerfield and Morrisons supermarkets in the town to ask locals to dig deep and help fund purchase of tools and materials, and the people of Penrith responded with a whopping £1,145 to help to team.

Richard Bastille, Princes Trust team leader in Penrith said: "All the youngsters involved should be very proud of themselves. It’s their first project and they’ve performed beyond our expectations.

"The work the team put in for raising the money and then doing the actual labour was superb and we all had a great time getting everything done and I know the youngsters learned a lot from it.

Ian Carrick, deputy leader for the team, which only started last month, said: "Our aim was to help rejuvenate the club house buildings, making it a more pleasurable environment for local community users and external visitors –and I’m sure they’ve succeeded doing that."

Before work began on the changing rooms the team organised a pre site visit, team planning session, presentation of ideas, and another site visit to write risk assessments

But the hard work began with the gutting of the rooms and preparation for painting, which included cleaning, filling-in and sanding.

After fitting a new door the three rooms were painted and new windows installed before the carpet was cleaned and the work moved outside where benches were improved and the rooms were given a fresh coat of paint on the outside, and to finish off the work a new scoreboard was built.

The group has been responsible for picking, planning, managing and undertaking the entire project with minimal input from the team leaders.

The Princes Trust Team programme is a 12 week course aimed at 16 to 25-year-olds. Through a combination of positive experiences and participation the main purpose is to develop new and existing skills with a view to re-engaging those young people back into education and or employment.
