Libraries across the county will be marking World Book Day this week.
The event celebrating books and reading has become an international event, with over 100 countries taking part on Thursday March 5.
This year, Cumbrian libraries have been involved in promoting a national World Book Day competition, 'Spread the Word: Books to Talk About', aimed at unearthing hidden gems from the publishing world. The public has been voting on the pick of 50 titles selected by publishers which haven't gained the recognition they deserve up until now.
As well as book and poster displays in Cumbrian libraries, the following events will be taking place around the county next week:
Barrow
- Tuesday 3rd March –Ramsden Infants class visits to Barrow Library (9.30am and 10.30am)
- Wednesday 4th March –Old Vicarage nursery visit for stories to Barrow Library (10.20am)
- Thursday 5th March –Low Furness class visits to Barrow Library –all day
- Friday 6th March –Erin Stockill, Area Young People’s Librarian, visiting George Romney junior school in Dalton –reading stories and taking picture books in (2.15pm).
Eden
- Thursday 5th March –Penrith Library we will doing a Baby Bounce and Rhyme session from 10.30 to 11.00, followed by a class visit from Beaconside school from 2.00-3.00.
- Thursday 5th March –Shap Library will be having a one-off introductory session for Baby Bounce and Rhyme from 10:00 to 10:30. Thereafter further sessions will take place in Shap Library once a month on Tuesday afternoons (2:00 to 2:30.
- Monday 9th March - Appleby Library will host a visit by an adult literacy group, who, amongst other things will be looking at the latest batch of Quick Read titles (published on World Book Day). Angela Fitzpatrick, Community Development Worker with the Library Service, will also be there chatting to the students.
South Lakeland
- Thursday 5th March –Kathy Bartlett, Bookstart Project Officer will carry out a Bookstart Treasure Chest presentation at Greenodd pre-school, Penny Bridge, from 11 to 11.30. There will be 20 children present, who will listen to a story and then receive their free packs of books and other goodies to keep.
- Thursday 5th March –Ulverston Library is hosting a Word Market Story time for adults at 10.30 –11.00am.
Lakeland Radio Book Club
Reader promotions officer Helen Towers will be introducing and reviewing the March featured book on Lakeland Radio as part of the Lakeland Radio Book Club. (This is a monthly on air book club run in partnership between Lakeland Radio, Sedbergh Book Town, PR Books and The Library Service, and launched in September 2008).
Copeland
- Thursday 5th March –Three classes from St Begh’s school will visit Whitehaven library dressed as book characters. Two classes are visiting in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Allerdale
- Thursday 5th March –Silloth Library will host a session for the local school’s reception class. An afternoon stories and songs event for mums and toddlers will be held at Silloth Children’s Centre.
- Thursday 5th March –A group from Aspatria Children’s Centre is visiting Aspatria Library for stories and songs in the morning. The session will be led by Linda Wilkinson, Young People’s Assistant, and the mums and toddlers are dressing up.
- Friday 6th March –Rhyme time for parents and toddlers at Workington Library. The Workington Reading Group will be meeting during the week too.
