Libraries in Eden will be celebrating the onset of spring with a series of scarecrow making sessions.
Groups, individuals, families and children are being encouraged to bring along their scarecrows and make those final vital adjustments in the library. Ideally the scarecrows won't be too big so they fit in the library - about 150cm is ideal for Penrith and about 90cm is suitable for the other branch libraries.
The finished scarecrows will be displayed in the libraries around Eden, plus some will be shown in Penrith's Devonshire Arcade throughout April. During this time, the public will be voting on their favourite scarecrow, with the winner receiving a prize donated by the library.
There is also a competition to find the best collective noun for a group of scarecrows - we have a gaggle of geese, a herd of cows and a murder of crows, but there doesn't seem to be any word for a group of scarecrows - perhaps because they lead such solitary lives! A prize will also be given for the best word.
