Cumbrian libraries are on the search for young volunteers to help run and promote Quest Seekers - the Summer Reading Challenge 2009.
Libraries across the country are challenging young people to try and read six books during the summer holidays. Young readers are given free stickers and goodies via libraries as they progress through the challenge and a special Quest Seekers bag, certificate and medal is given to them once they complete it.
This year libraries in Cumbria are giving young people aged 14 years and over the opportunity to gain recognised experience by helping to run and promote the challenge.
Deb Holden, Senior Librarian at Penrith Library, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for young people looking for new skills to add to their CV or who are at a loose end this summer. It will be fun and rewarding for all those involved - helping young children to explore different authors and to share their joy of reading."
Libraries would like young volunteers to encourage children to join and complete Quest Seekers, help promote the challenge, assist library staff in manning the reading challenge desks, talk to children about what they have read and help them to find what they want. They will also give out the free stickers and special gifts, encourage children to complete the challenge and attend an awards event at the end of the summer.
Volunteers will be needed for a minimum of 2 hours per week up to a maximum of 25 hours per week for 14 years olds and a maximum of 35 hours per week for over 15 year olds - although this will depend on library opening times.
Volunteers will be provided with full training before the challenge begins, and there will be countywide recognition for the volunteering done.
Anyone aged 16 and over can use the time spent volunteering to contribute to the ‘V’involved scheme and it may go towards a Duke of Edinburgh award.
Volunteers are required throughout the county and to apply, please contact Deb Holden on 01768 812104 or email deb.holden@cumbriacc.gov.uk. Please note the closing date for volunteer applications is Sunday 24 May 2009. (If aged 16 and over we will complete a security check).
