5/11/2009 - National School Meals Week - media opportunities

Thousands of primary school pupils throughout Cumbria will learn a valuable lesson next week when they tuck into a school dinner of healthy, locally produced food.

More than 150 primary schools across the county will take part in National School Meals Week, as the importance of a nutritious lunch is promoted across the country between Monday 9th and Friday 13th November.

On Monday, results of the nation’s most popular school meal will be announced and, to coincide with this, Cumbria’s primary schools will serve one of the most popular Cumbrian school meals:

Tasty treats include: fresh, locally sourced sausage with creamy mashed potatoes and a selection of vegetables, followed by Patterdale Lemon Crumble Bar.

Pupils in these schools will be voting for their own favorite meal throughout the week and the most popular in each school will be served on Friday. As the week comes to a close, pupils will also show their appreciation for their school caterers by making thank you cards.

Sue Castle-Clarke, Head of Premises, Cumbria County Council, said:

"A healthy diet is crucial to a child’s learning and development. National School Meals Week is a great opportunity to stress the importance of healthy eating and promote some of the high quality food produced and prepared in Cumbria.

We’re happy to take this opportunity to give pupils a voice about the meals they enjoy and the opportunity to say thank you to the people who prepare their food."
