Children in Barrow will learn a valuable lesson next week as Roose School hosts a ‘Bright Brake’ day on 25th November, teaching children from 4 to 11 how to stay safe on Cumbria’s roads.
The school is running the event in association with National Road Safety Week (23rd to 27th November), an initiative of the charity organisation, Brake.
Throughout the day, children will have the opportunity to take part in road safety lessons, win prizes for bright clothes and colouring competitions, to listen to Road Safety Officer Ken Hanson and to practice staying safe on chalked roads in the school grounds.
Activities are organised to help educate and protect the pupils in a fun way. Children will have the chance to make traffic light biscuits and Zak the Road Safety Zebra will make an appearance.
Councillor Gary Strong, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: "It’s important to teach children how to stay safe on our roads from a young age. Young pedestrians are the most vulnerable of all road users with a child or young person being killed or injured on UK roads every 10 minutes. Road Safety Week is a great opportunity to draw attention to this issue, make this important education interactive and step up road safety messages within our schools."
Media will be welcome to visit Roose School in Barrow on Wednesday 25th November for a photo opportunity and the chance to talk to staff and pupils about the importance of road safety.
