Calva Bridge in Workington remains extremely unstable. Emergency services are urging residents in Seaton and Camerton to consider personal contingency arrangements to ensure that, in the event of collapse, they are still able to make a 999 call.

Were the bridge to collapse, telephone communications would be lost to around 3,000 homes north of the river. The mobile phone system should remain operational but may be congested and it is anticipated that it may take several days for British Telecom to install alternative lines.

In the event of a failure of the telephone system, people are therefore urged to follow the below advice:

IF YOU NEED TO MAKE A 999 CALL: -

1. Try using a mobile phone. If you do not have a mobile please ask a neighbour to use theirs.

2. If your mobile cannot get through due to congestion try another neighbours mobile who may be on a different network.

3. If you STILL cannot get through go to either:

a. Faith House, Seaton;

b. Camerton Village Hall; or

c. Community Centre in Northside.

A radio operator will be available at these locations to pass your call to the emergency services.

Residents are urged to make plans to help the elderly or vulnerable people in their community with these arrangements.
