Libraries across Cumbria –with the exception of Cockermouth –have escaped unscathed from last week’s flooding and are playing a vital role in providing information and support in some of the worst hit communities.

Cockermouth Library is closed due to flood damage, but staff are deployed in the Flood Support Centre at Christ Church in Cockermouth, where a small selection of books is available. Items on loan from Cockermouth Library can be returned there, or to any library in the county –there will be no overdue charges. Free internet access is available at Christ Church also. The library has received messages of support and offers of help from members of the public, partner organisations, and even from author Ann Lingard, who lives locally, who has offered to help with the clear-up.

Ulverston and Keswick Libraries are acting as Flood Support Centres, and Seaton Library is on standby as a contact point, although normal library services are unaffected.

Workington and Whitehaven Mobile Libraries have been acting as Information Centres at the Community Centre, Northside, Workington and Our Lady of the Lakes & St Charles Catholic Church, Keswick.

All libraries in the Allerdale and South Lakes areas, alongside Whitehaven, Carlisle, Penrith and Barrow Libraries will offer one hour free internet access to residents and businesses affected by the floods until Christmas to assist with the recovery process.
