Trading Standards have become aware that traders are being asked to sign up to an "approved trader list", at a cost of £200.

A spokesman for Cumbria Trading Standards said " As far as I can tell there is no vetting procedure for inclusion in the list. So clearly there are dangers for householders who act upon receiving the list - our advice remains always to employ someone who is known or recommended to you.

"There is sufficient work for traders without the need to chance £200 on a list that may or may not reach householders in need of help."
