25/9/2009 - Transport discussions for Penrith Neighbourhood Forum

People in Penrith are being asked to come forward with ideas for making it easier to walk, cycle and use public transport to get around the town.

At the Penrith Neighbourhood Forum on Thursday October 8, Cumbria Highways is asking residents about improvements they’d like to see that would help them get around without using a car.

Points for discussion could include:

What are your concerns as a pedestrian?

What would encourage you to cycle or walk to work, school or the shops?

How can bus stops and shelters be improved?

The scope for improvement will be limited by funding and not all the schemes people suggest will become a reality - the aim of the consultation is to get residents thinking about enhancements they might like to see that could be realistically tackled within Cumbria’s highways budget.

The informal discussion drop-in session section of the neighbourhood forum takes place between 12noon and 5pm at Penrith Library, where people can just call in and talk about their ideas. This will be followed by a public discussion from 7pm-9pm at Penrith Parish Rooms in St Andrew’s churchyard.

As well as discussing sustainable transport issues and other matters people want to raise, the Environment Agency will be using the neighbourhood forum as an opportunity to explain the Thacka Beck flood alleviation scheme.

The Forum is a public meeting and all are welcome. For more information contact the Eden Community Unit at Penrith Library on 01768 812368.
