30/4/2010 - Roadshows urge Cumbria to get composting

Cumbrians will be encouraged to give composting a grow at a series of roadshows around the county.

To mark Compost Awareness Week (May 2-May 8) six events have been organised around Cumbria to spread the composting message to the public by answering any compost related questions and letting people know how they can get their hands on a cut-price compost bin.

The roadshows, organised by Resource Cumbria –the strategic waste partnership between the county and six district councils, are taking place at the following locations:

Sunday 2nd and Monday 3rd May - Carlisle Spring Show, Bitts Park Tuesday 4th May - Penrith town centre, market place, 10am - 3pm Wednesday 5th May - Workington town centre, 10am - 3pm Thursday 6th May - Whitehaven market place, 10am - 3pm Friday 7th May - Barrow town centre (outside the town hall), 10am - 3pm Saturday 8th May - Ulverston market place, 10am - 3pm

The theme of this year’s Compost Awareness Week is "Give it a Grow" aimed at encouraging people to try something new such as making compost at home for the first time, trying peat-free compost or growing their own vegetables.

Composting is an easy and inexpensive natural process that transforms kitchen and garden waste into valuable food for gardens.

And to help people get composting, Resource Cumbria is offering compost bins at a discounted price to anybody living in Cumbria.

People interested in getting a discounted compost bin can ask for details at the roadshows, call 0844 571 4444 or visit the Resource Cumbria website at www.resourcecumbria.orgthis external link will open in a new window

Cumbria County Council waste prevention officer Kate Burrows said: "By making their own compost people are putting waste such as vegetable peelings to good use and are following the three simple practices of reducing, reusing and recycling that help minimise waste.

"I’d urge anybody wanting to find out more about making their own compost, using more environmentally friendly peat-free compost or growing their own veg to come along to the roadshows where we’ll be offering hints, tips and advice."
