Motorists in Carlisle are being urged to watch their speed and help prevent children becoming road traffic victims when driving in the city.
Next month (March 2010) the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership is launching a new campaign reminding motorists in Carlisle of the dangers of driving too fast.
A ‘watch the clock’ warning will appear on the back of 150,000 pay and display car parking tickets issued in Carlisle over the next few weeks.
Councillor Tim Knowles, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for road safety, said: "There’s no doubt that if all of us drove slower in Carlisle, and across every town in Cumbria, then children’s lives would be saved.
"In 2009 alone 16 children were killed or seriously injured in Carlisle, and slower speeds really do save lives.
"We know that a pedestrian who is struck at 30mph has a 45 per cent chance of being killed or seriously injured, but that falls to 5 per cent if the accident takes place at 20mph, so I really welcome the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership’s latest campaign."
