6/1/2010 - Allerdale Borough Council Winter gritting

Following reports that national reserves of salt for road gritting are running low and Cumbria County Council’s announcement of contingency plans regarding their responsibilities for gritting roads in the county (http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/news/2010/January/05_01_2010-092524.asp), Allerdale Borough Council would like to inform residents that its contractor, responsible for the Council’s gritting duties, has not reported any shortage of grit supplies.

Although Cumbria County Council is responsible for the gritting of roads in Cumbria, Allerdale Borough Council is responsible for gritting of its own car parks and for filling approximately 10 grit bins, for use by the public, in Council-owned car parks, Cockermouth and Dearham cemeteries, Harris Park in Cockermouth and the Moorclose shopping precinct.

Should members of the public have queries about the gritting of roads and housing estates they should contact Cumbria County Council on 01228 606060 or visit http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/roads-transport/highways-pavements/highway-maintenance/wintermaintenance/Saltingyourroadsinwinter.asp
