25/1/2010 - Text service for flood affected locals in west Cumbria

Locals affected by the floods in Cockermouth and Workington can now register for text message updates about the help and support that is available to them.

Residents and businesses are being encouraged to register for the service which will provide updates about the recovery work and local services that are on offer.

The service is being delivered by Cumbria County Council in partnership with The Asia Project which has been set up by Derwent and Solway Housing Association.

Updates will be given on work done by the county council and housing association as well as district council, voluntary and charity organisations and many others.

Anyone wishing to sign up for text updates should text their full name, mobile phone number and the address of their flood affected property to 07884 275 222 (for Cockermouth) or 07818 250 573 (for Workington).

The county council is also producing regular flood bulletins giving updates about local recovery work. You can visit www.cumbria.gov.uk/floods to find out more.

The clothes bank in Cockermouth has had to move due to the recent cold weather. The bank, which was previously situated at the old Fairfield Restaurant, has now moved to Mitchells Retail Market, Lorton Road, next to Jordan’s Jungle.

Open from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday, the clothes bank has a wide variety of new and second hand clothing as well as toiletries, nappies and more. The service is a partnership between Cumbria County Council and Age Concern and is staffed by volunteers.
