8/3/2010 - Lift-off for Cumbrian school's amazing rocket experience (media invite)

Pupils young and old from the Cartmel area get a science lesson to remember this week (Wed 10 March) courtesy of a forty foot rocket.

Cartmel Priory CE School, a specialist science college, is hosting a visit from Starchaser Industries, which specialises in the development, operation and commercialisation of space related products and services.

The company is bringing, for display and examination, its forty feet high Skybolt rocket, capable of reaching 100 miles into space at a speed of more than 3,000 mph.

It's all part of a day of information and learning, including various workshops, to improve student interest in science.

140 pupils will attend from the Cartmel Cluster primary schools - Allithwaite, Lindale, Flookburgh, Grange, Leven Valley, Cartmel and Cartmel Priory.

They will be joined by Years 10 & 11.

Eight pupils from Years 10 & 11 Triple Award Science students from Sandgate School in Kendal are also attending.

Cartmel Priory has received sponsorship for the visit from BAE Systems Submarine Solutions and Forge Europe.

BAE graduates will give talks on engineering careers at BAE.

The following day (11 March) the primary children will visit the Big Bang exhibition in Manchester as part of National Science Week.

Between March and June 2010 all six primary schools will host rocket workshops assisted by BAE Systems graduates funded by a partnership grant from the Royal Institute.

Experiments will involve water pressure rockets, stomp rockets and battery powered rockets. Further experiments will involve using helium to launch teddies into space!

This has been a joint Cartmel Cluster project between Cartmel Priory CE School (Headteacher Paul Williams and Subject Leader - Science Andrew Russell ) and Extended Services (Cartmel Cluster) Cumbria County Council (Judith Mitchell).
