4/10/2011 - Libraries dig deep into the Archives

Skip main menu

Libraries in the south of the county are hosting public events as part of the BBC’s Reel History Project in association with the North West Film Archive at the Manchester Metropolitan University.

Audiences will be able to watch films from as far back as 1914 from their local area, reminisce and share memories from a display of old photographs and other materials taken from the Local Studies collection in Kendal Library.

Members of the public are encouraged to delve into their attics to see whether they have any old cine film, photographs or slides that they would be willing to share at future events.

Jackie Fay, Local Studies Librarian from Kendal said: “We are really looking forward to hosting these events. Film is a wonderful way to bring our history to life, evoking memories of our past and encouraging people of all ages to share their own stories with each other."

In addition to the public events local school children will be invited along for special viewings and will listen to a small number of guest residents willing to share some of their memories. In Kendal a group of older residents will share memories from the Second World War which will include a viewing of a DVD of Kendal Home Guard.

The events are scheduled to take place at the following libraries;

Grange-Over-Sands Library, Tuesday 11 October, 7pm - 8:30pm Kirkby Lonsdale Library, Tuesday 18 October, 2pm – 5pm Ambleside Library, Wednesday 19 October, 11:30am – 1pm Windermere Library, Thursday 20 October, 11:30am – 1pm
