Library services in Harraby have a new home from this week with a relocation to be part of the local community centre.
The new Harraby Library Link, which was originally expected to open at the end of this month, will see opening hours increase by 65 per cent, including Saturday and Sunday morning openings. It is based at Harraby Community Centre to ensure local people still have access to library services despite the closure of the library’s old site next door.
The library link will be open at the same times as the community centre – meaning it will be available to the public 46 hours per week rather than the weekly 28 hours it was open for before the move.
Harraby library had been based at the former North Cumbria Technology College site until it was boarded up last week as part of the building programme for the new Pennine Way School.
The new library link at the community centre will allow users to borrow books using a self-issue system and request and collect books that are not in stock.
In addition, there will be four public computers providing internet access and library staff will visit on a regular basis to provide advice and activities.
For the first few weeks of operation, library staff will be permanently on site to help people wanting to use the new service.
Cllr Gary Strong, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet member for libraries, said: “This move to the Harraby Community Centre will maintain library services for local people in their area and staff will be on hand to guide users and answer questions about using the link for the first few weeks.
“The great news about moving next door is that the opening hours will increase by 65 per cent and will mean that Harraby Library Link is open longer than any other library in Carlisle apart from the main one in the Lanes.”
The new opening hours will be:
Monday - 9am to 5pm
Tuesday - 9am to 5pm
Wednesday - 9am to 5pm
Thursday - 9am to 5pm
Friday - 9am to 5pm
Saturday - 11am to 2pm
Sunday - 11am to 2pm
