12/1/2017 - Cockermouth highway works enter final phase

Work will start next week on the final phase of a road and drainage scheme on High Sand Lane and Main Street, Cockermouth.

The latest and final stage of works are scheduled to start on Monday 16 January and will include the complete renewal of footways and the road surface in High Sand Lane. A small area of Main Street at the end of High Sand Lane is also being reconstructed and there will be a need for some traffic management on Main Street itself for material storage and a lay down area. The works are expected to take approximately seven weeks to complete.

To enable Cumbria County Council's contractor to safely carry out these works, temporary access restrictions for vehicles and pedestrians will again be in place. Temporary signage will be used to restrict traffic and pedestrian access when the work requires the closure of High Sand Lane for public safety reasons. Two way vehicle access on Main Street will be maintained at all times.

The road and pavement works are being carried out following completion of works to successfully install a large diameter drain in High Sand Lane which now fully connects the drainage system in Main Street with the outfall to the river.

Alternative parking arrangements for residents affected by the temporary road closures will continue to be in place during the final phase of the works.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: "I'm very pleased this scheme is nearing completion and the new drainage system is now fully in place. A lot of hard work and effort has gone into this project and I'd like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this period. There will be some short term disruption over the next few weeks while resurfacing work is carried out and we apologise for any inconvenience."
