Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG)

DCLG is responsible for setting policy that supports local government; communities and neighbourhoods; planning, building and the environment; housing; regeneration and economic growth; and fire and resilience.  

Under the new Coalition Government DCLG is seeking to create a free, fair and responsible Big Society by putting power in the hands of citizens, neighbourhoods and councils.

The DCLG web site provides detailed information on Planning, including links to policy documents, guidance and advice, research, consultation papers and statistics.


The Environment Agency

The Environment Agency are the leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales. The Agency makes sure that air, land and water are looked after by everyone in today's society, so that tomorrow's generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world.

The Environment Agency deal with issues relating to flood defence, pollution control, farming and waste, with their area of responsibility covering all of England and Wales. The Agency's activities range from influencing Government policy and regulating major industries nationally, right through to day-to-day monitoring and clean up operations at a local level.


The Planning Portal

The Planning Portal is a one-stop-shop for planning information and services online.  The website provides general information on the planning system, advice on how to apply for planning permission, the facility to appeal against a planning decision, and information on the latest government policy.

The Planning Inspectorate

The Planning Inspectorate's main work is dealing with appeals relating to planning applications and planning matters. They also hold hearings into local development plans to determine the "Soundness" of these local policy documents. They also deal with a wide variety of other planning related casework including listed building consent appeals, advertisement appeals, and reporting on planning applications.


Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI)

OPSI delivers a wide range of services to the public, information industry and government relating to access and re-use of government information. Her Majesty's Stationary Office (HMSO) sits within OPSI and provides an online resource of UK legislation and publications.


Royal Town Planning Institute

The RTPI is a membership organisation whose members are professional planners. The RTPI website provides a wide range of planning advice, as well as publications and planning related statistics.


Royal Institute of British Architects

The Royal Insitute of British Architects is a membership organisation whose members are qualified architects. The RIBA exists to further the cause of architecture in politics and culture in the UK and internationally.  The RIBA website provides a wide range of information such as what architects do, how to find an architect and fees, architecture events, news, awards and publications.


CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment)

CABE, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, was the government’s advisor on architecture, urban design and public space.  CABE worked directly with architects, planners, designers, developers and clients, offering them guidance on projects that will shape lives. Parks and open spaces are as important as bricks and mortar.  CABE was set up as statutory body in 1999 and was abolished in 2011.
