Nuclear Sites in Cumbria

The area around Sellafield is actually home to 4 licensed nuclear sites: Sellafield itself, Windscale (a former UKAEA site), Calder Hall (the location of the UK’s first – but now closed – nuclear reactor) and the Low Level Waste Repository near Drigg.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is in the process of combining the Calder Hall, Windscale and Sellafield sites, in order to put them out to competition for a new Parent Body Organisation - watch this space for updates.

The County Council has long been an active member of the Sellafield Local Liaison Committee, which was reformed as the West Cumbria Sites Stakeholder Group, with separate Sub Committees for each nuclear licensed site plus Emergency Planning and Environmental Health.

Following the NDA's consultation on their stakeholder engagement in 2007, there will be a rationalisation of the Sub Committees, including the addition of two new ones - Commercial and Socio-Economic.
