In the UK, the operation of nuclear sites is subject to six separate regulatory frameworks:
- Development control – exercised by local government, but with powers of “call-in” by Government for nuclear facilities. In Cumbria, development control on nuclear facilities is shared by the County Council and Copeland Borough Council, with the County Council having responsibility for all development associated with waste management.
- Minerals and Waste Local Development Framework - which includes nuclear waste management policy
- Operational safety control by the Health and Safety Executive's Nuclear Installations Directorate
- OCNS (the Office for Civil Nuclear Security)
- International safety inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency
- Environment Agency - monitoring and assessment
