Cumbria County Council formally adopted the Cumbria Minerals and Waste Development Framework Core Strategy and Generic Development Control Policies Development Plan Documents on 23 April 2009. These documents apply to those areas of the county that are outside both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.

The County Council is now working on the Site Allocations Policies and Proposals Map. The documents will identify the sites that are needed for minerals and waste management developments to 2020 and ones that need to be safeguarded from being sterilised by other incompatible developments.
