Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects

A number of major energy related projects are planned for Cumbria, which are "Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs)" requiring  a Development Consent Order under the Planning Act 2008.   The projects are decided by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change rather than the local planning authority.

Although Cumbria County Council does not decide the outcome of these projects, the developer is required to consult the Council and seek its views, and those of local community, in developing a project.  Once a Development Consent Order application has been submitted, the Council will be invited to submit a Local Impact Report, setting how the project will impact upon the local area.
