Cumbria Climate Change & Carbon Reduction Programme

Cumbria County Council is leading on a £100,000 programme to help local planning authorities better understand and tackle the causes and effects of climate change in Cumbria. The programme is being delivered in partnership with Eden District Council and the Heart of Eden Development Trust, the Lake District National Park Authority, Nurture Lakeland, and the Cumbria Planning Training Scheme.

The programme will: 

Provide Training and Advicethis external link will open in a new window to planners, developers, councillors and communities on a range of issues linked to carbon reduction, energy efficiency and renewable energy production.

The following events are planned: 

30 March Traditional Buildings: adapting for a low carbon future
13 April Code for Sustainable Homes and Merton Masterclass
5 May Renewables in a Cumbrian Context
13 May Renewable Energy Site Visit day - south cumbria
23 May Renewable Energy Site Visit day - west cumbria
9 June Renewables in a Cumbrian Context - Kendal

Explore how local communities in the Heart of Eden can reduce their carbon footprint and how the planning system can support this through the Sustainable Energy Edenthis external link will open in a new window project.

Explore how low carbon transport master planning can be developed with communities and businesses in the Hawkshead and Coniston area of the Lake District National Park.

Nurture Lakelandthis external link will open in a new window will explore how to develop a strategy for low carbon tourism in Cumbria with tourism businesses based in the Ambleside, Rydal, Grasmere area of the Lake District National Park.

Funding has been secured from the North West Improvement & Efficiency Partnership (NWIEP) for 2010/2011as part of a much wider programme focussing on ways to increase local authority capacity to tackle the causes and effects of climate change in the North West.
