Cumbria County Council has been actively developing and refining environmental policy for some years. The Council takes action to protect the environment and encourages others to do so through a variety of partnerships, grant aid and projects which support community education and engagement.  Guiding this process is the Council Plan. One of the 6 key aims of the Plan is creating and protecting a high quality environment for all.

There are numerous approaches to putting this into practice through policies on waste management, sustainable transport and biodiversity. All of these policy approaches are linked by a common thread: sustainability. Sustainability involves new ways of thinking and working. It goes beyond protecting the environment and involves tackling social and economic pressures that combine and interact to shape the environment.

This integrated approach involves facilitating social aspiration and economic progress in a way which protects and enhances the environment.

A more detailed explanation can be found in the Council's Sustainability Strategy. It was originally approved in January 2004 and updated on 23rd May 2006. T he 2006 version provides an overview of the state of play in a range of policy areas: environmental management, waste, biodiversity, sustainability appraisal, climate change and sustainable communities.  It also contains an action plan which is reviewed and updated each year.
