Updated Tuesday 28 July

Thanks to the recently installed pumping infrastructure at Redhills Quarry, the water levels will very shortly have reduced sufficiently to enable us to complete the surveys necessary for us to assess the site for potential damage that may have occurred due to the flooding; and to proceed towards resuming normal service at Millom Household Waste Recycling Centre as swiftly as possible.

In early August, a drainage survey will take place to ensure that the site can comply with the necessary Environment Agency environmental permit. A further survey will be undertaken shortly thereafter to assess any impact the floodwaters may have had on the stability of the site.

We will continue to provide updates as regularly as possible, and until normal service is resumed at the HWRC, the alternative service at Millom will remain operational.

The temporary arrangements will be available Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday until further notice, at the following times:

-          the temporary residual waste facility will be available from 8am – 2pm (or until capacity is filled) accepting any additional residual waste that your house generates – i.e. black bag rubbish

-          the temporary recycling facilities will be available from 8am – 4pm accepting plastics, glass bottles and jars, paper and cardboard, textiles, books, mixed wood

Please do not bring the following materials for disposal:

  • Electrical Items – white goods, small domestic appliances, batteries
  • Hazardous wastes – paint, oil, asbestos
  • Bulky waste items – e.g. sofas, mattresses, household items
  • Stone and rubble
  • Green Waste - Copeland Borough Council's fortnightly green waste collections started this week (9 March)

The County Council will look to develop this temporary service in the medium-term so that it can accept additional waste streams.  Keep checking the County Council’s website at cumbria.gov.uk/recycle for the most up to date information as to what materials the site will accept.

You can also call the recycling helpline, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm on 0845 055 1118 for an update.  We will also update as the situation develops via our twitter feed @cumbriacc and our facebook page at facebook.com/cumbriacc.this external link will open in a new window
