Road signs, road markings and studs
Road sign

Kirkstone Pass

Road signs and markings are important safety features on the network. They exist to direct, inform, warn and protect road users. They are important to all roads users - cyclists, pedestrians and drivers alike.

When placing new signs, we take care to:

1. avoid causing obstructions
2. ensure they are the correct size
3. ensure that they don't cause distraction to drivers.

Wherever possible, we install signs made of reflective material so that they can be clearly seen at night. This means that we reduce the reliance on signs that require lighting at night, thus saving energy and further maintenance.

We also have a road sign cleaning programme, so that they are cleaned on a regular basis.

Road markings and roadstuds are subject to considerable wear and we refurbish them when they lose their effectiveness.

The old cast iron fingerposts and milestones are an important heritage feature on our roads. Unfortunately, we are not able to fund the regular painting and maintenance work that these items require. In some parts of the County, parish councils and/or conservation groups have taken on some of this work and have done some very impressive work of restoring these to their former glory.
