Coast to coast - news!
Please be advised if you are walking the coast to coast route that thanks to Open Access there is now the option of reducing some serious road-walking and instead enjoying a fell top.
There is no need to slavishly follow older editions of the guidebooks! The new Terry Marsh (Cicerone press) and Martin Wainwright (Aurum press) guidebooks already have the new route in.
The area of land is called Sunbiggin Tarn or Ewefell, just to the east of Tebay and Orton and the west of Crosby Garrett. By clicking on the link below you can open a copy of the Local Sign Board for the area. This has been installed with Natural England funding to help implement the new open access rights.
The line of the Coast to Coast is marked with brown dots as a recommended route. Please be aware that this area is an Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and therefore take extra care not to damage the environment or wildlife. However, at times of high fire risk or when there are other open access restrictions for land management, you may have to find another way using public footpaths and bridleways.
