There are literally hundreds of places around Cumbria where Adult Education Courses take place - from schools to churches to villages halls, and some learning centres are purpose built. One such place is the Maryport Educational Settlement.
Built in 1786 by shipbuilder Henry Curry, the Settlement building had stood empty since 2002, in which time the battering wind and rain had taken their toll.
Thanks to a £700,000 refurbishment project, funded through a partnership between the adult education service and the Settlement trustees, the Maryport Educational Settlement formally reopened on Monday 21 April.
The Grade II listed building now boasts a modern community, arts and learning centre, training and activity rooms, an IT suite on the ground floor and office accommodation for county council adult education staff on the first floor. There is also a purpose built arts annex, which can host a range of arts and crafts activities.
