Adult education courses can give you confidence, improve your mind and even help you land your dream job. And with Adult Learners’ Week taking place between 9 to 15 May, and courses happening right across Cumbria, there’s never been a better time to learn something new.
Leonie Coombes from Egremont took up the learning challenge to improve her job prospects, and completed a Level 2 City & Guilds qualification in 2D computer aided design (AutoCAD) at Whitehaven Adult Education Centre.
Leonie told us: “I decided to take the course because I was 26, working part time behind a bar and really struggling to find a better job. I must have applied for well over 100 jobs in that year and never even got an interview!
“The course led us through from the absolute basics of the program to producing a professional looking CAD drawing. The tutor had worked with AutoCAD for many years and was a fantastic help to all the people on the course.
“The course ran from 6-9pm, one night a week, which gave us plenty of time to do the exercises and assignments, as well as giving us the time to chat with the tutor individually.
“When I’d been on the course a couple of months I updated my CV and re-posted it on the jobs sites on the internet. Within a month I had a call from a recruitment agency who wanted me to go for an interview with a local engineering company who wanted someone who could do basic drawings using the AutoCad software.
“I was quite nervous when I went for the interview, but I took a couple of drawings from the night class along and two hours later they rang to say they’d like to offer me the job!”
