Helping smokers kick the habit

The county council now has 'Stop Smoking Co-ordinators' in place promoting the stop smoking message in the community. The Co-ordinators work alongside GP surgeries to support patients with initiatives such as ‘Quit and Win’, which provides three months free physical activity with Carlisle Leisure Trust, Barrow Park Leisure Centre and Dalton Leisure Centre to people who are confirmed as not smoking after 4 weeks. Stop smoking support is now available from 56 pharmacies across Cumbria, and all Cumbria Fire & Rescue Community Safety Officers are now handing out stop smoking support cards as appropriate when they do home safety checks. Cumbria Trading Standards is expecting to meet a target of 100 test purchases of tobacco by underage young adults from retailers. Recent guidance for the prevention of the uptake of smoking by children recommends continued pressure on retailers and providing them with training, both of which feature in the delivery plan by Trading Standards.

Increasing the number of Cumbrian's taking part in physical exercise

In Cumbria, there has been an increase in participation rates in physical activity over the past couple of years. 22.7% of the county’s population now takes part in 30 minutes of moderate intensity sport and active recreation three times per week, meaning that more and more people in Cumbria are taking the time to exercise and keep active. The Barrow-In-Furness area saw Cumbria’s biggest increase in physical activity participation, rising to 28.8% in 2007/08 from 19.8% in 2005/06.
