It’s now over 100 years since Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scouting movement, and since that time millions of young people have experienced the challenge and adventure of being a member of The Scout Association. But Scouting isn’t just for the 400,000 young people in the UK who take part – over 100,000 adults get involved too!
And these days you’re more likely to find Scouts building a Roman catapult or camping under the stars than standing in a church hall saying “dyb, dyb, dyb”! Adam Dickinson of Cumbria Scouts said: “Scouting is a great way for people of all ages to mix together, and Scouting in Cumbria has grown rapidly in recent years. Although this growth shows that the Scouting ethos of challenge and adventure are as relevant today as they have ever been, it does mean the large increase in demand from young people has led to a shortfall in adult volunteers. “We’re now trying to recruit more adults to help support Scout Groups in a wide variety of roles, from looking after equipment to becoming a regular leader or assistant – all dependent on the time you have available.”
