Governor Support Team - training and development

The Traded Services team co-ordinate a training programme for school based staff and governors: Cumbria's Training Events for School Based Staff and Governors. This programme brings together the courses which are delivered through the Cumbria Continuing Professional Development, Local Learning Network and Governor Development Programmes. 


Cumbria's Training Events for School Governors 2019-20 (PDF 1.6MB) brings together a selection of high quality, value-for-money full day/half day/evening session courses designed to support governing boards. Booking arrangements are available below.

Places for all courses must be booked through SLA Online. Traded Services no longer accept paper booking forms or telephone bookings. 

When booking via the online system, there is an option to email course details to the delegate. Please select this option which acts as your confirmation of the booking. Traded Services will also send out an email reminder one week before courses are due to take place. When booking places on multiple courses, these can all be "checked out" of your shopping basket at the same time, using the same purchase order number. There is no need to check each course out separately (unless you wish to use different order numbers).

What is the purpose of cluster working?

Cluster working is a way of developing school led, self-improving systems Schools and governing boards are encouraged to work together to share their skills, knowledge and other resources which will contribute to improving the outcomes for children in schools in Cumbria.

Each cluster is unique to the needs of those who make up the cluster. It can be as formal or informal as you wish, as long as it works and there is a purpose and outcome of working in a cluster to meet your needs.

What are the benefits of cluster working?

Working as part of a cluster has may benefits including:

  • sharing of work practices/resources;
  • evaluating work practices;
  • sharing of knowledge and skills;
  • supporting other governing boards;
  • receiving support from other governing boards;
  • shared training - benefits include a shared cost, tailor made training at a time and venue suitable to all, good relationship building.

How can the Governor Support Team support your cluster?

As a team, we can offer 2 hour sessions/training on:

  • facilitation of your first cluster session;
  • Governance - Roles and Responsibilities;
  • Governance - Developing Leadership;
  • Introducing Effective Clerking;
  • Introducing Monitoring and Evaluation.

Modern Governor modules are designed to help school governors develop their skills through e-learning which supplements traditional 'face to face' training and development opportunities. Whether you are a newly elected governor or an established governor looking to increase your existing knowledge, Modern Governor has something for you.

Modern Governor subscriptions are now available through the Traded Services Business Development Team and can be ordered through SLA Online, by selecting the "Modern Governor" section on the SLA Online via the 'services' tab, then click the buy now and complete the order.

The Department for Education has appointed the National Governance Association to deliver Governance Leadership Development programmes.  These programmes include development for chairs, clerks and governing boards and are designed to have real impact on school improvement.
