Training

Each child and young person with a vision impairment is different. Training is available for those caring for and teaching children and young people with a vision impairment and will be based around the individual and their needs.

For Staff
The SEND Teaching Support Team can offer training on an ongoing basis to nursery and school teaching staff and support staff eg mid day supervisors. Sighted Guide Skills can be taught to staff in schools by the Mobility Instructor (Habilitation Specialist) employed by Blind Children UK. Staff from Blind Children UK work in conjunction with the SEND Teaching Support Team.

For Friends and Fellow Students
A child or young person with a vision impairment is likely to benefit from their friends or fellow students understanding their vision. The SEND Teaching Support Team is available to support settings. Please contact your Specialist Advisory Teacher for Children and Young People with a Vision Impairment to discuss this.

The Young My Guide Service is available from Blind Children UK. This enables greater independence for a child or young person with a visual impairment. Sighted Guide Training is taught to students with normal vision to guide their friends around the school.  The course leads to a qualification in My Guide Training. Please contact Blind Children UK for further information (see link below).
