Effectiveness of the Cumbria Reading Intervention programme

Research strongly supports the view that it is the combination of phonological training and reading that is most effective when children are developing early literacy skills.

Since 1994 thousands of children in Cumbria have completed programmes of Reading Intervention support.  Results from these show that the intervention has remained effective in practice after the end of the research study.  Some of these results are included here: -

During the Cumbria Reading Intervention programme children read texts at an appropriate level of difficulty for their needs.   Samples of the text that children are able to read on average (based on a sample of 1,013) with at least 90% accuracy at the beginning and end of the intervention period are included here: -

Further data collection has also demonstrated that the intervention brings about improvements in children's self-esteem, confidence and ability to participate in classroom activities.
