Wigton fire station is staffed by On-call Firefighters and houses one fire engine.

The Futamura/Innovia site is the main risk and major employer in the town. Other risks are associated with residential properties, large volumes of traffic on the predominantly 'B' type roads and the busy A595 and A596 trunk roads running through the station area. Consequently there are a significant number of serious road traffic collisions. The rural environment outside the town brings the hazards of agricultural building fires, wildfires and livestock rescues.

The town of Wigton has a population of approximately 5,500.  It is located half way between the Lake District National Park and the upper Solway Firth coast to the northwest of the County and  The fire station was purpose built to cover the main risk in the area, that presented by Innovia (Formerly UCB Films). In addition to the two appliance bays, it also has an adjoining drill yard and drill tower.

The area contains:

  • 1 Heritage Site; Hawk Bobbin Mill Caldbeck

  • 4 Grade I listed buildings and 15 Grade II listed buildings

  • 7 Sites of Specific Scientific Interest

  • 1 Site Specific Risk; Innovia Films Ltd

  • The Fire Station flooded in 2005, 2013 and was very close to flooding in 2008. Large scale flooding has affected some local businesses in recent years.

The main risk is associated with Innovia where they handle large quantities of solvents and  corrosives in the manufacturing process. Other risks are associated with residential properties, large volumes of traffic on the predominantly 'B' type roads and the busy A595 and A596 trunk roads running through the station area, which results in significant numbers of serious road traffic collisions. Open farmland brings the danger of barn fires, heath and moorland fires, as well as livestock rescues.

The table shows the number of incidents that have occurred within a nominal area assigned to the station (as shown on the map in the station profile).  This is different to the number of incidents attended by fire engines which are based at the station, as they may attend incidents outside their station area.
