Apprenticeships - What we'll do for you

Apprenticeship vacancies

We take apprenticeships seriously and we will invest in you. Our aim is to help you achieve your career goals.

As a Cumbria County Council apprentice not only will you make a positive difference to the people and communities within Cumbria, you will:

You'll earn a wage and get holiday pay whilst undertaking an apprenticeship with us. You'll be paid the national apprenticeship wage (if 19 years old or over, after 12 months your salary will increase to minimum wage for your age).

You'll work in a real job alongside highly skilled and experienced staff.
You'll be assigned a mentor from day one, who will provide you with day to day support, advice and guidance.

You'll gain valuable and transferable on the job skills to help you in your career. An apprenticeship is a job with training to industry standards.

You'll gain a nationally recognised apprenticeship qualification - Level 2, 3 or 4
You'll get your home to work travel costs paid up to a maximum of £ 15 per week.
You'll receive additional support throughout your apprenticeship from the Council's Apprenticeship Team.

Working for us brings all the benefits of one of the county's best employers:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Local Government Pension Scheme (one of the best)
  • Flexible working environments
  • Occupational maternity, paternity and adoption pay
  • Childcare voucher scheme
  • Access to occupational health services
  • Staff offers and discounts

You'll study for your apprenticeship qualification with one of our high quality training providers. Depending on the qualification, you will study with them for 1to 4 days a month.

While there is no guarantee that a position would become available at the end of your apprenticeship, you will have access to the council's internal job vacancies list which is only available to council employees, improving your chances of getting a permanent job.

In the last five years the majority of apprentices secured a job with the council at the end of their apprenticeship, with others going on to jobs elsewhere or to further study and education.

An apprenticeship with us will set you up for an exciting and rewarding career, even if you're not sure what that might be right now!
