A Traineeship can really help to get your career started and help unlock your great potential. Traineeships give you skills to prepare for the world of work, including Maths and English qualifications and the work experience to help you get an Apprenticeship or a job.

Cumbria County Council is working with Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust to provide some fantastic opportunities starting in November. A Traineeship with us could open a door to a career you might not even have thought of and we'll support you to get there.

Traineeships are aimed at Cumbria residents aged between 16 and 24 that are currently not in work or education; are focused on work or the prospect of it; and have not yet achieved a level 3 qualification.

Traineeships are designed to help young people gain the knowledge, skills and experience required to get an apprenticeship or job. They are targeted at young people who are close to being work ready but just need a little more help and support.

You may be able to take a traineeship if you are:

  • unemployed (or work less than 16 hours a week)
  • have little work experience
  • are aged 16-18 and don't have a level 3 qualification, or if you are aged 19-23 and don't have a level 2 qualification.

This programme aims to help young people gain the necessary skills to move into paid work including apprenticeships.

This Traineeships programme will be delivered over approximately 15 weeks and consist of:

  • 3 days a week classroom based activities from 9.30am to 4.30pm to develop employability and functional skills, where required.
  • A work experience placement - Approximately two days a week.

Please note:

  • Whilst on this programme; you may be entitled to receive a bus pass to help cover the cost of traveling throughout the programme.
  • If you are claiming any out-of-work benefit, e.g. Jobseeker's Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Employment Support Allowance, or Income Support and are offered a traineeship you are advised to inform your Jobcentre Plus adviser to check if your benefits will be affected should you undertake a traineeship.

Traineeships will give you a chance to:

  • Gain valuable work experience with a professional reference
  • Achieve an Employability Skills award
  • Achieve English, Maths and IT Functional skills qualifications

Construction Civil Engineering (Lillyhall)

Customer Services (Workington and Whitehaven) 

Portering and Transport (Whitehaven) 


Adult Care Worker (Brampton)

Business and Administration (Carlisle)

Customer Services (Carlisle) 

Construction Civil Engineering (Skirsgill)

Engineering Technician (Carlisle)

Please note a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check may have to be carried out depending on the nature of the job.

Traineeships are held in Carlisle or Workington depending on your work placement location.

We will use Cumbria County Council venues and provide support with travel where necessary.

The Traineeship Programme is planned to run from November to February 2019.

Once you finish the traineeship and you are still looking for employment, we will:

  • Support you with applications for Apprenticeships, Bank Work or employment. The county council will offer priority interviews for its apprenticeship vacancies
  • Help you to prepare your CV and application forms
  • Help you prepare for interviews
  • Celebrate your successful completion of the programme with an Awards Ceremony
