Kendal Infrastructure Improvements

The proposed Kendal infrastructure improvements are part of the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership's (LEP) Growth Deal allocation. £ 2.3 million was identified for the delivery of a number of infrastructure improvements in Kendal. These Infrastructure improvements will support the anticipated growth in the area as identified in South Lakeland District Council's Local Plan. Cumbria County Council is delivering the infrastructure improvements on behalf of Cumbria LEP, working closely with SLDC in scheme development and delivery.

Kendal is only 8 miles west of the M6 corridor, which provides Cumbria with excellent regional links, and an attractive location for investment and economic growth. The benefits of this project will not just be restricted to Kendal but spread across nearby villages of Oxenholme, Natland and Burneside.

There are existing highway constraints at key locations in Kendal, particularly in the town center due to narrow streets and congested junctions. The anticipated developments identified in South Lakeland District Council's Local Plan are expected to result in further negative effects on the highway network, therefore there is a pressing need to introduce a number of infrastructure improvements to help support the economic growth of Kendal.

This package of improvements includes junction widening, improved signalisation and traffic management as well as walking and cycling improvements. Together these improvements focus on implementing the necessary infrastructure and transport planning measures across Kendal to reduce vehicle queuing and delay at key locations on the highway network, as a direct impact of new housing and employment allocations in Kendal and surrounding villages

The work has been split into two packages.  Package A mainly focused on junction improvements, while Package B has a focus on sustainable transport, including new cycle routes and traffic calming.
