Danny Rurlander is a UK based children's author whose novel, Spylark, was shortlisted for the Times/Chicken House Prize 2017.

Danny Rurlander presents an action-packed event introducing students to the wonderful world of Spylark. Opening with an interactive introduction to the principles of flight, Danny uses the inspiration and research for his Middle Grade action- adventure novel as a basis for thinking about what makes a story "fly". With the help of "Buzz" his indoor drone, along with slides, maps and stories, he helps the children explore how to turn real world locations into vivid settings for gripping adventures, why good writers are the nosiest people on the planet, and why islands feature in all the best stories! Danny's 45 minute presentation (plus Q and A and book signing) inspires boys and girls aged 9 upwards in reading for pleasure, introduces them to the flying technology of the future, and challenges them to explore their own world with fresh eyes.

"I don't think I've read a more original children's book this year." Just Imagine

"A gripping adventure, with all the right ingredients....a timeless piece of storytelling." Book Trust

"Danny's fast paced Spylark sessions, like his novel, captured the children's attention from lift off and taught them that anyone can have a go at writing a story. From danger and intrigue in the beautiful lakes to the science of flight the session was interactive, stimulating and great fun. It was so inspiring for our children to meet an author from Cumbria writing about local places we know and love." Lucy Walkingshaw, Stanwix Primary School, Carlisle

"Spylark has really captured my class' attention. They have loved our daily reads, exploring and investigating with Tom. Reading Spylark has had a noticeable impact on their writing. So having Danny lead a session in class was a real treat. The children learnt about a writer's inspiration, the creative process, and how to create a really engaging world. A wonderful workshop." John Lindsay, Wilson's Endowed Church of England Primary School

"Danny Rurlander quickly held the attention of all the children during his visit. He enthused them with his engaging, lively talk. It was wonderful to see so many children gathered in small groups avidly reading Spylark following Danny's talk." Janine McGregor, Moorside School

"Danny's visit was a great success - the drone demonstration had the whole assembly spellbound! The talk was perfectly pitched for our year 7s and 8s. They were inspired in their own creative writing, lots of children bought the book, and our library copies went out immediately. We hope to host a return visit when his next book comes out!" Jane Spencer, Trinity CofE School, Carlisle

"Danny Rurlander proved a huge success with our Y3-Y6 during his visit. The children were engaged throughout; there were moments when the children gaped in disbelief, shouted with excitement and cheered during the quiz! They loved hearing extracts from Spylark and enjoyed listening to how unique stories are written." Georgia Rogerson, Bolton-le-Sands Church of England Primary School
